Let’s make your work load lighter and your impact larger - one week at a time!

Mission Brief

This week, we’re zeroing in on how to write better, faster grant narratives. If you’ve ever spent days crafting a compelling story for a funder, only to run out of time or confidence, you’re not alone. Today, we’re showing you how to use ChatGPT to take the heavy lifting out of grant writing, while keeping your voice and heart at the center of every proposal.

Tool of the Quest

Our featured tool this week is ChatGPT by OpenAI (https://chat.openai.com/). This AI-powered assistant can help generate draft grant narratives, needs statements, project descriptions, and even budget justifications, based on your inputs. Once you have the draft text, you can refine, personalize, and polish the document. ChatGPT makes mistakes and the output should be treated as an outline but can save so much time and effort on the front-end so you can spend your time personalizing the proposal and making it your own.

Map to Success

Below are sample prompts to use in ChatGPT to expedite your grant proposal writing. These are just suggestions - play around with prompts of your own and see how much time you can save!

🔹 GENERAL GRANT PROPOSAL Prompt: You are an expert nonprofit grant writer. Write a full draft proposal for the following nonprofit using this structure: Executive Summary, Needs Statement, Program Description, Evaluation Plan, Budget Justification.

Organization: [INSERT NAME] Mission: [INSERT MISSION] Project Name: [INSERT PROJECT TITLE] Funding Requested: [INSERT AMOUNT] Project Description: [INSERT SHORT DESCRIPTION] Location: [INSERT CITY/STATE] Grant Name: [INSERT GRANT TITLE] Funder: [INSERT FUNDER NAME] Deadline: [INSERT DEADLINE]

🔹 MINI GRANT REQUEST (LESS THAN $10,000) Prompt: Write a short grant request letter (500 words) that includes an intro to the nonprofit, purpose of request, need for the program, and expected outcome.

Use a warm, professional tone and assume the funder is a small family foundation.

Campfire Questions

Q: How do I make my grant stand out from others?

A: Great question! Tailor your language to the funder’s exact values (often found on their website or 990s), show measurable outcomes, and humanize your story. You can even use tools to “revise this proposal to emphasize equity” or “match this tone to a government grant.” Play around with prompts to find what instructions work for your nonprofit’s specific needs and the funder’s specific requirements.
